Historical Summary: ="Galena Daily Courier 23 June 1859 More Improvements On the site of the late fire on Main street, P. Marsden is about putting up a splendid brick store, fully equal to that destroyed. It will be three stories on Main street, 20 feet front, with the same front as the De Soto House, and running through to Commerce street, 120 feet deep. The basement will be fitted up for wholesale rooms; the first story as general sales room and counting house. The upper stories will also be used in the wholesale department. The building will be fireproof, with a brick cornice and tin or galvanized iron roof. Marble and Smith are the builders, J. C. Smith superintendent. When completed, it will be occupied by J. A. Packard & Co., Wholesale Dry Goods House, the occupants of Marsden’s building before the fire."
