Historical Summary: ="Galena Weekly Gazette 10 October 1901 A New Home in Park Avenue The new residence of Mr. J. T. Dawson, on the East Side, will be occupied by himself and family about Nov. 1. The exterior of this residence, with its broad veranda extending along the front and north side, and its elegant corner bay-window and tower, presents a picture that reveals the artistic ability of contractor W. A. Telford, who planned and completed the work. The visitor, on entering the vestibule, beholds a long hall, flanked on either side by spacious rooms, while to the left a stairway is noted that is a maze of ornamental, artistic carving in the hardwood, which is used in the rooms and is highly polished. The doors are fitted with leaded art glass—the pieces being set in lead. One window is of stained glass and is worthy of especial mention. The dining room has a panel-beam ceiling of hardwood, which gives an odd effect. Beautiful fireplaces, bath with tiling, and many conveniences are in this dwelling, which is well-lighted in every part. Hot water heating apparatus will be used, if we are not mistaken, with hot water service. A cellar of ample capacity—of the same size as the house, is one good feature; also, the large attic on the third floor, which is without posts, the roof being “framed from the edges,” so that it carries is own weight. The above is an attempt at a description of one of Galena’s modern homes." |
